In a recent interview with David Axelrod president Barack Obama admitted to being broke prior to becoming the US President.
Prior to his rise to stardom as the keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention, and subsequently running a terrible campaign, Barack Obama was financially broke and had his credit card declined when he attempted to use it.
The President also was transparent about how awful he felt after having lost the 2000 Democratic primary for Illinois 1st congressional district, and to top it off the campaign placed him in a financial disaster. His wife was expecting their second child.
Obama had completely considered a totally different career path following his disappointing lost. A career not having anything to do with politics.
The Democratic National Convention was being held in Los Angeles, CA and Obama had no intentions in attending it until a friend invited him to go. When he arrived there he attempted to rent a vehicle but when he try to pay with his credit card it was declined.
An embarrassed Barack then says he heads to the hotel where his friend awaited him.
“I get to the hotel where my friend is ready to go and we go over to the convention and they give me the pass that basically only allows you to be in the halls. The ring around the auditorium doesn’t actually allow you to see anything,” the president says.
And because he was not popular at the time he was turned away from post- convention parties.
The President said he “felt as if [he] was a third wheel in this whole thing.”
“I ended up leaving early, and that was the stage when I was really questioning whether I should be in politics,” said the president.
But four years after having been embarrassed in Los Angeles Obama was the keynote speaker at the convention where he gave the speech which made him a force to be reckon with in the Democratic party.
“If you had won that congressional race we wouldn’t be sitting in the Roosevelt Room right now,” David Axelrod told the president during the interview.
